Sydney Morgan Berry
Regiment: Signaller, Royal Navy – Combined Operations
Medals: 1939–45 Star, France & Germany Star, War Medal 1939–45
Sydney Morgan Berry served with distinction as a signaller aboard a Royal Navy Troop Landing Craft during the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944. Tasked with ferrying American servicemen to Omaha Beach, his role was part of the vital coordination effort that underpinned one of the largest amphibious invasions in history.
Though he rarely spoke of his wartime experiences, Sydney once shared a haunting memory from that day: the sight of wounded and dying soldiers on the beach, desperately pleading to be taken back aboard. Bound by orders and limited by the lack of medical facilities on their craft, he and his comrades were unable to help—a memory that lingered for the rest of his life.
Sydney’s service reflects the quiet bravery and burden borne by so many who took part in Operation Overlord. His contribution, like theirs, was instrumental in the fight to liberate Europe.
