LAC stands for Leading Aircraftman, a rank in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II. LAC was originally a trade badge, but became a rank in 1951.
Pre war Jack was an electrical shot welder.
He was with the 175 squadron and the 41 squadron.
On D-day 1,800 RAF personnel and 456 vehicles landed on the beaches, and by 9th June, this had increased to over 3,500 personnel and 815 vehicles working on airfield construction, aircraft servicing and forward controlling.
No. 175 Squadron RAF was a part of 121 Wing; 83 Group; 2nd Tactical Airforce; RAF in support of World War II Normandy landings, and supported the allied advance through France, Holland and Belgium on into Germany. The squadron was active from under canvas on temporary landing grounds in a matter of days after the D-Day landings.
41 Squadron provided air support in the lead-up to, and throughout the D-Day landings. On 19 June, however, the Squadron was pulled off air support for the bridgehead in France and was deployed solely in the destruction of Germany’s newest weapon, the V-1 flying bomb.
