Tank Landing craft LCT 2442 landed on Gold Beach in first wave at ‘H’ hour with three tanks. Two were hit as soon as they beached. The third roared on. David’s landing craft was the sole survivor of a convoy of eight. He remained there for three months supplying ammunition and setting up the Mulberry Harbour.

On his return to the Royal Navy he was shipped to the Far East operating with the American Third fleet serving on destroyer HMS Ulysses spending 6 months in Japanese waters before going on to Bombay and home to England April 1946.
