Ron joined the regular army in 1939. He was posted to Jersey but was soon evacuated when the Germans invaded. He embarked for Normandy shortly after D-Day in 1944 and landed at Juno Beach with the Canadian regiments. He provided support and maintenance cover for the many vehicles involved in the Normandy landings, including General Montgomery’s staff car. His unit worked its way through northern France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany ensuring buildings left booby-trapped by the retreating Germans, were made safe.

He returned to the UK in 1947 and continued serving in the regular army until 1952 and subsequently spent many years in the TAVR.
