Jim was sent to France during the ‘D’Day landings aboard S.S. Derrycunihy. Reached Sword Beach but the ship was sunk by a mine. Jim was in the water after they were all told to abandon ship. He was taken to a destroyer and was returned to England. Eventually, Jim was sent back to the front in the 51st Highland Division as an interpreter.
He took part in the Battle of the Bulge and the relief of Belsen camp.
He was de-mobbed in 1947.
