Roger Victor Clutterbuck
D-day began on Mulberry’s at Tilbury for Roger, embarking onto a Fort Class Liberty ship to cross the Channel. He belonged to the South Wales Borderers, but while they went to Gold Beach – Roger was with No 3 Battalion at Sword Beach, second wave. Climbing down netting onto a landing craft, he trundled up the beach in a Bedford QLD filled with ammunition and Bren guns. He progressed to Caen Canal Bridge at Benouville, the infamous Pegasus Bridge, to join British Airbourne forces. Here he witnessed Lord Lovat arrive with his piper Billy Millen. He continued to the Rhine before a reshuffle saw him return to Britain. He was retrained and posted to Palestine until the conclusion of the war.
