David Jonathan Windsor-Stokes

PIPER
ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIERS
SERVICE NUMBER 24483618

David as a soldier and a piper served his country and performed at several Edinburgh tattoos.

David was one of seven individuals who in 1982 formed the Sword Fund to assist Veterans of the Normandy campaign.

He used his skills and contacts to assist in the arrangement of commemorative events, parades and sourcing military bands. This included piping, acting as parade marshal and when requested playing at funerals for Veterans.

In 2008 with Peter Hodge, he started a campaign to send Bristol Veterans to Normandy for the 65th anniversary. They succeeded in this and in the process caused such a stir nationally that the government allocated funds for all Veterans to visit their theatre of war over the subsequent years.

Over the years David made several trips to Normandy and supported the Veterans in any way he could. He had a great admiration for the Veterans and was in part instrumental in the establishment of the Garden of Peace. A lasting memorial to their courage and bravery.
